چکیده

Rapid means of characterizing and detecting virus particles are very important for a wide variety of applications. We have used vaccinia virus, a member of the Poxviridae virus family and the basis of the smallpox vaccine, as the test case and characterized these particles using atomic force microscopy and micron-scale cantilever beams, with the long-term goal of developing devices for the direct rapid detection of air-borne virus particles. The cantilever beams, driven by thermal noise and a PZT piezoelectric ceramic, served as resonating sensors to measure the mass o a v p m t d c ©

Enhanced light microscopy visualization of virus particles from Zika virus to filamentous ebolaviruses

Light microscopy is a powerful tool in the detection and analysis of parasites, fungi, and prokaryotes, but has been challenging to use for the detection of individual virus particles. Unlabeled virus particles are too small to be visualized using standard visible light microscopy. Characterization of virus particles is typically performed using higher resolution approaches such as electron mic...

Cantilevers with integrated sensor for time-resolved force measurement in tapping-mode atomic force microscopy

We present a micromachined cantilever with an integrated high-bandwidth resonator for direct measurement of tip-sample interaction forces in tapping-mode atomic force microscopy. Force measurements are achieved by a diffraction grating that serves as a differential displacement sensor for the tip motion relative to the cantilever body. Time-resolved tip-sample interaction force measurement is d...

Stability and sensitivity analysis of periodic orbits in Tapping Mode Atomic Force microscopy - Decision and Control, 1998. Proceedings of the 37th IEEE Conference on

In this paper, the most widely used mode of atomic force microscopy imaging where the cantilever is oscillated at its resonant frequency is studied. It is shown that the amplitude and the sine of the phase of the orbit vary linearly with respect to the cantilever-sample distance. Experiments conducted on a silicon cantilever agree with the theory developed.

Application of Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Mode Microscopy on inscription from Proto-Elamite period in Tappeh Sofalin

The study of cultural heritage artifacts and the research of a protection and restoration intervention create with - and are often limited to - a complete characterization of their surface. This is not only factual for museum objects, but also for archaeological artifacts, because the object as it was discovered may contain precious unknown information that could be lost by too much aggressive ...

High efficiency laser photothermal excitation of microcantilever vibrations in air and liquids.

Photothermal excitation is a promising means of actuating microscale structures. It is gaining increased interest for its capability to excite atomic force microscopy (AFM) microcantilevers with wide frequency bandwidth in liquid environments yielding clean resonance peaks without spurious resonances. These capabilities are particularly relevant for high speed and high resolution, quantitative ...
